Search Tips

The ww2images database has a very flexible search facility that can find most subjects quickly and efficiently.

There are two search buttons to choose from;

'Search for all ALL words but in any order' allows you to enter multiple words or parts of words and if ALL of them can be found in a photograph's description then that photograph will be shown.

So for example if you are searching for a Spitfire in Italy then enter SPITFIRE ITALY and it will only return images that have those two words in the description.

'Exact Phrase' searches for a string of letters and spaces, so for example searching for MESSER will bring back all Messerschmitts, searching for MESSERSCHMITT 109 will bring back anything that contains 'Messerschmitt 109' but would not bring back anything captioned as Messerschmitt Bf109.

Generally we caption all squadrons by the shortened 'Sqn', so if you are searching for 19 Squadron for example, use the Exact Phrase button to search for 19 SQN. This will bring up results for 119, 219, 319, 419, 519 and 619 Squadrons as well but is better than using the other button which will bring up every entry with Sqn and the numbers 1 and 9 in it.

We also add the nationality wherever possible in the form of the country name, so Germany, Japan, USA, England, Russia etc.

If you are searching for something specific and can't find it do feel free to get in touch via the Contact Us form and we'll see if we have anything.
